About Artist Rena Bierman
Rena Bierman in her studio.
Rena was born in Canada into a family of artists. She lived in Calgary for 31 years and part-time in the USA. In 2003 Rena relocated in Kelowna, BC., but after the tragic loss of her husband, she returned to Alberta to settle in Cochrane in October 2008.
As soon as Rena was old enough to hold a pencil, drawing became a favoured past time. She began painting as a self-taught hobby artist until 1983 when she studied art under the direction of Marion Barker and other instructing artists at the University of Calgary. The most advanced learning occurred on her own through the study of many art books while learning and applying the techniques of a variety of artists until her own style and techniques emerged. An artist is always a student of art, so learning became a lifestyle and Rena's work still evolves.
Although Rena's post-secondary training led her into the field of ophthalmology as an Ophthalmic Assistant and Refractionist; her career as an art instructor began in 1989 at the Marion Barker Art Studio where she taught 48 students. Following that role, she established classes in her home studios in Calgary and Kelowna.
Rena also worked for a period of time as a decorative artist painting designs and murals for home builders within their show homes.
Her work has been shown in art galleries in Calgary before moving to Kelowna in 2003, and she has participated in exhibitions including The Calgary Stampede Western Showcase.
Rena has painted landscapes, seascapes, florals, still life, architectural subjects, as well as portraits. However, since living in Kelowna, her most loved subjects have become living flowers and fruit from the gardens, vineyards and orchards of the Okanagan.
Rena is best known for her living floral paintings in oils.
"Although I have produced originals in graphite, pastels and acrylics, I now paint exclusively in oils. I love the brilliance of this medium and it's permanence, as well as oil's attributes which make it possible to achieve the desired finish and feeling evoked in the viewer."
Shortly after moving to Cochrane, Rena accepted the project as art director and curator of the RockPointe Fine Arts Event held in October 2009. Her first position as art director of an art exhibit was in 2005 in Kelowna, BC. She has been very involved in the arts community since relocating to Cochrane.
